I have a few questions. First, when the drive is installed in the case, it is then okay to leave it in the open? Second, where do you purchase the adapter, do the cases differ between IDE and SATA drives, and are the adapters different for IDE and SATA drives? Finally, when you boot you’re computer and access the files on the external hard drive, does it default at the main drives that you would normally see when accessing files from “My Computer” ( C:, D:, and so on)?
I have an external USB hard drive (Buslink 2.0 Disk-On-The-Go/Lite) that I cannot get the data from. It spins with no particular abnormal noise. My laptop recognizes it as an attached piece of hardware, but it doesn’t show up as an attached drive under “My Computer.” The error I get is a specified I/O operation was not completed prior to timing out.
I don’t need to spend thousands as this is not critical data, but nonetheless, would still like to find out if it can be done and evaluate the cost basis before doing so.
Have you tried removing the HDD from it’s enclosure and slaving it into another computer with and IDE/SATA adapter because your HDD most likely is still good you will just need to move it to another HDD because it is probably the interface on your external HDD that has gone bad or if you are using a surge suppressor sometimes that can be the cause.
I have an hp SATA notebook hard drive and an SATA external HD case. Problem is – it looks like it should fit but there seems to be a “case” or something over it that prevents the pins from fitting. I don’t want to nilly-willy take things off. There are a few screws that allow you to take a case off the sides so it fits into the 2.5″ hd case but the pins don’t fit. Any thoughts/suggestions? Company I purchased the external drive case says it should fit!

Alot of times LAPTOP drives have SMALLER pin outs and you need a conversion kit. I would contact your local electronics store with hard drive in hand for advice on how exactly to go about getting this drive into the enclosure.
I’m trying to slave my hard drive from a 2 year old crashed HP laptop but there seems to be a problem. Instead of there being pins on the front of the hard drive there are two rows of flat copper bars. I was told this is a edge network adapter and to try and remove it to get to the pins. I had to remove the greenboard and found out that the adapter seems to be connected to the greenboard and I see no pins. How do I slave this drive and what type of interface do I have to buy.
hi,i have a ibm thinkpad laptop.a message keeps poping up on my screen telling me this information………… a usb device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. then it makes the following recommendation…..to renable the port,disconnect the hardware and click reset..can anyone help me to solve this problem please……..i have no idea…….thanks…robert………….

That means that the device you are plugging in is drawing to much juice and the thinkpad is shutting it off to keep from cause physical damage.
i have the same problem:
gateway nx570x that i replaced the hard drive for and is running fine now, still on xp
i also have a toshiba satellite c655 running windows 7
i have the old gateway hard drive (was not clicking, just lost partition i think)
i also have sata cables connected to the old gateway hard drive
i could plug connect the old hard drive to the gateway with replaced hard drive or i could connect the old hard drive to the toshiba, but i have yet to try either. i just would like to recover some files off the old gateway hard drive. do you have a video with more info? link?
