Sony Handycam DVD Will Not Finalize

So this is a very prevalent problem I have run into over and over through the years and up until just recently it has been a problem I could not fix. Here is the scenario:

You record 20 to 30 minutes of important and sentimental moments on your Sony HandyCam and then put the camera away. A few days later you then pull the camera out again to record something else and it records just fine. A month or 2 goes by and you have something else you need to record so you use the camera again. This time the disk is full and you remove it and pop in another and continue recording. A few months go by and you want to take a look at the cool event you recorded so you pop it into the DVD player and it will not play. Hmm, ok lets put it into the handy cam.. it now plays fine. Ok let’s try and finalize the disk and it will not finalize. So now you’re in a situation where you can only watch your movie through the handy cam since the disk will not finalize.

sony_handycamHere is what you can do in order to be able to get the data off. First you will need cd recovery software that can read the Sony format. IsoBuster works well. You need to harvest off the data to your internal hard drive. You will notice that you will still be unable to play the movie files it creates because you more then likely do not have the proper codec. The easiest way I have found to get around this is to use another piece of third party software to convert the files to AVI files. A very good piece of software for doing this is SUPER. After you convert the files you should then be able to play them with no problem, you should also be to use any burning software to then make a DVD you can play on your television.

Doesn’t work. I’ve been using my handycam since 2007 and it’s never given me this problem. All of a sudden, today when I tried to finalize a DVD-RW of my kids, it says “This function is currently not available.” So I popped the mini DVD into my computer and created a virtual ISO image. Even from that ISO, it doesn’t have the proper format inside the folders. To play, a DVD needs to have a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS folder structure, with proper files inside. This DVD-RW has a DVD_RTAV folder with a VR_MOVIE.VRO file inside. It is unplayable in any media player, including VLC. It is also unrippable from DVDFab, which I found to be capable of properly ripping any DVD (except this one). I can’t finalize the DVD, I can’t format it (it will delete the data) and I can’t burn the videos off the disc. This is frustrating.
