Surface pro data recovery – chip-off, Surface laptop recovery
Surface pro and Surface laptop both use a NAND chip that is surface mounted to the motherboard as data storage for the devices. All Microsoft devices ship with BitLocker encryption by default.
Some time ago manufacturers realized it was more cost efficient to integrate storage directly on the motherboard. Unfortunately, if the motherboard fails this causes your data to become inaccessible. Microsoft and Apple both automatically link to One Drive or iCloud to allow you to backup and access data from multiple devices. However, if your data was not synced or exceeded the amount of data allocated by your plan, you will not have access to it via your One Drive or iCloud account.
NAND does go bad. NAND does wear. NAND manufacturer use complex algorithms to level NAND wear. Leveling wear ensures the same cells are not consistently in use while others are not. If your Surface pro or laptop is not able to boot due to NAND failure you will notice a very small hard drive icon with an x through the middle in the upper right hand corner. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/surface-storage-options-and-hard-drive-sizes-9915981d-3e38-f06c-4706-82b5dedf33bc
We can recover from damaged Surface Pro or Surface Laptops. NAND wear is something we see in our lab often. The video below is a short how to for surface mount NAND wear.
